About Us

A Little History…

In the fall of 2004 several musicians who had been actively playing in the GLBTS community of Denver for up to 25 years along with some prominent donors decided that the GLBTS community needed an instrumental group that would be varied and diverse enough to accommodate all types of musicians.

Several musicians had wondered about a new group but one individual finally took action. After speaking to several other musicians, Dwayne Thomas contacted other musicians with his idea and started the ball rolling. On February 12th. 2005 they met and dreamed-up the concept of an “Association” that would accommodate every level of musical proficiency by incorporating an undetermined amount of ensembles around a central “main” group. Thus the “Colorado Community Band Association” (CCBA) was born. By March 14, 2005 the first rehearsals were had and by June 2005 the group had it’s first performance. As the year progressed, A wind ensemble was steadily growing then a Dixieland band emerged, pianists were quickly incorporated into the group. Then a brainstorm to add a non-musicians group gave birth to the idea of the “Band-Aides”, as organizational booster club. By the Spring of 2006 soloist were added and a concert band had it’s first concert. By June 2006 the CCBA had “put-on” 7 separate performances within a year. All the performances were organized as fundraisers or benefits for other organizations in the GLBTS community. Despite being made up of accomplished and professional musicians, admission to the performances have been limited to “suggested donations” so that everyone could attend.

As time went on the collection of ensembles changed and adapted to the growing interest of the community and the CCBA membership. By following the desires of the steadily growing membership, the CCBA will add several new ensembles and performing groups to the organization during the 2008-2009 season!. In addition to the woodwind ensemble, and the Concert and Dixieland bands, a string ensemble is slowly forming and members have asked for  brass, jazz, percussion, and guitar ensembles. In addition some have expressed the desire to have more solo performing opportunities.

Today the Colorado Community Band is performing at a professional level. Due to the difficulty of the music, the “band” is slowly setting the standard for GLBTS community bands.

The “main group” of the CCBA is a “community concert band” which rehearses every Tuesday at 7:00pm at the “Warren United Methodist Church” located at 1630 E. 14th Ave. (at Gilpin) in Denver, Colorado.

With the vision of our founders, the Colorado Community Band Association hopes to accomplish a whole lot more this “season”. We hope to continue to give back to the community and support GLBTS musicians create “Serious Music and Serious Fun”!
